Firefox 1.0.6, bad

hacks

So, I've determined that Firefox 1.0.6 is not right for me... I'm going to stick to 1.0.5 until the 1.5 version comes out (and possibly even until all my favorite extensions are tooled to run in 1.5).

I describe why I chose to revert to 1.0.5 and how you can do this (on the Mac, mostly) below the fold:

(If you're reading through a reader: Did you know I have full-content feeds, too?)

What sparked this? Two things:

  • 1.0.6 was crashing on me left and right and leaving the browser in strange states (where it was often just barely possible to frantically bookmark tabs). Everyone hates a crashy client.

  • Greasemonkey seems to be skipping 1.0.6 and going straight for the 1.5 series of betas.

  • Broken Greasemonkey meant a broken Googlewhacker, and I just can't have that. I often use a Google search to get URLs.

If you're experiencing a lame 1.0.6 experience, no Greasemonkey and no Googlewhacker... I suggest you follow these directions.

  1. Follow steps 3-6 of my Firefox upgrade instructions.

  2. Delete the Firefox application (Firefox.app) from /Applications/. (This is important because something in the application gets fouled).

  3. Unpack a fresh copy of the 1.0.5 application and put it in /Applications/.

  4. Run and then quit the 1.0.5 version of Firefox.

  5. Do steps 9-12 of the upgrade instructions.

  6. Go get your Googlewhacker back!
